Until next Season - Season 2020

I'll be on hiatus for the next half year or more from updating and posting here at this little project of mine that's grown a bit over the years. It has been my pleasure to chronicle the 2019 Season of SoCal Men's Community College Golf. I will look forward to "seeing" you again next season, Season 2020! So long for now! Enjoy your summer's amateur golf and for those players moving onward, all the best to you!

A couple of things from me: This past year I returned to SoCal for my 50th College Reunion from the Univ of San Diego and received my Golden Torrero medallion and lapel pin. The University has been a treasure to me since I was 18 years old and remains as such.

Finally, I will be soon celebrating in SoCal a granddaughter's HS graduation and a grandson's marriage. Then upon return from SoCal welcoming our fifth (5th) great grandchild into our world, and another Mainer. And finally you'll find me on a local golf course in our little corner of New England:

Canyons Wins Going Away at State Championships

Our 2019 Men's Community College Golf Season finished yesterday with the 36-hole CCCAA State Championships at Silverado Resort & Spa's North Course. SoCal teams finished 1-2-3 in the competition with Canyons (COC) 1st, Santa Barbara City 2nd, and Cypress College 3rd while Mt San Antonio finished 6th.

Certain Hall of Fame coach Gary Peterson (Canyons) and his team won the State Title for the record 8th time since winning their first in 1993 under Peterson, followed by wins in '00, '02, '06, '08, '15, '17, & '19. His young men shot +14 over par for two rounds with a scorching +3 over the final 18-holes.

Santa Barbara City, which was tied after the first 18-holes with Reedley at +21 over par rebounded with +10 over par team score in the final 18-holes to secure 2nd place while Reedley shot +28 in the afternoon to finish 5th.

Cypress ('18 Champions) shot bookend +23 over par in each round to secure 3rd place 32 strokes off the winning team's score.

SoCal players filled the All-State Team in 2019 with Nobuhiko WAKAARI, (Canyons) winning medalist honors with a -2 under par performance score of 142. He was +1 following the first round and was "on fire" with a -3 round of 69 in the second round.

2019 Final - TEAM Rankings - Final 2019

I have posted the Final TEAM Rankings for SoCal Men's Community College Golf for Season 2019.

Last week I had added each round of a team's performance at their Conference Finals into the season long averages. This week I gave each round of the Conference Finals its own weight in addition. I then included the results from the SoCals as one entry not two, in other words I did not separate out AM or PM rounds. Thus this final team rankings is still a result of a team's "body of work" for the season and not just a repeat of the SoCal results.

I always enjoy doing this site for the players, coaches, and families of SoCal Men's Community College as well as other interested college coaches and college administrators.

I played my first 9-holes of golf since early October yesterday and I was not as rusty as I expected. Our course made it through winter in really wonderful shape actually better shape that I did, I am certain.

Best wishes at the State Championships and I will post results here as well as update the State Championships history page to include photos with your support and cooperation.

FINAL TEAM RANKINGS 2019

NorCal Championships

The NorCal Championship results are now posted at Results here.

The four qualifying teams for the State Championships are: 1) Reedley; 2) San Jose City; 3) Folsom Lake; 4) Fresno City.

The qualifying individuals not members of the above qualifying teams are: 1) Kyle KATZ, Sierra; 2) Jonathan TANIHANA, American River; 3) Garrison CHAVEZ, Taft; 4) Mitchell BYNERT, Monterey Peninsula; 5) Greg WIKOFF, Modesto JC; 6) Christian GUZMAN, San Joaquin Delta.

Big thanks to Jerry Hannula, Saddleback Ass't AD for the data.

SoCal Championships

The SoCal sleeping giant arose on the South course to overcome a 13 stroke deficit in the SoCal Men's Community College Championships. Canyons (COC) fired an even par round (360) (Los Serranos North) yet found itself 13 shots behind Mt San Antonio (347 13-under par) heading into the South round. On Los Serranos South, Canyons (COC) fired a 4-under par score (366) while Mt San Antonio shot 15-over par (385).

Canyons (COC) won the SoCals with a two round total of 726 in the 36-hole one day event where par was 730 and they were the only team to make or break par on the South course. The SoCal Championship is always an endurance contest and there are not very many teams as good as Canyons (COC) in said format.

Mt San Antonio finished 2nd (732), Santa Barbara City finished 3rd (739), and Cypress finished 4th (740) to complete the team qualifiers for next Monday's State Championships at Silverado Resort & Span in Napa. This year there are two teams from the Western State Conference and two teams from the Orange Empire Conference qualifying for the State Championships.

Full team results for the SoCals can be viewed at RESULTS here.
Photos here.

In the Individual Championships,
Jacob MONTES (Palomar) was the SoCals medalist shooting 4-under 68 in the AM and 3-under 71 in the PM round for a special day of 139 strokes against a par of 146. Joining Jacob on the All-SoCals Team were Felix TSUI (MtSAC), Myoung KIM (Orange Coast), Dalton DAVENPORT (Cypress), Han LEE (MtSAC), and Nobuhiko WAKAAI (Canyons).

The top 15 and ties in the Individual Championships are listed at the RESULTS here.

Individuals qualifying for the State Championships who are not members of a qualifying team are:
Jacob MONTES (Palomar), Myoung KIM (Orange Coast), Tyler THURMOND (Orange Coast), Kyle HAZLETT (Palomar), Michael RAY (Ventura), & Nick BURNS (Ventura).
